live improv with ableton

this is what we did last night for the open labs NAMM streamcast. its a trip hop-like set with STHIL plus Kusser doing an improv set. only one pre-thought-recorded song is in here (3rd one). rest is off the cuff. usually, i don’t do breaks into between songs but this was a bit different. usually we just do one continuous stream of music. also, ableton makes it easy to bang out notes, i’m quickish with the trackball. of course it helps to have two talented people helping me. of course i’m the white guy on the left. jenn is in the middle, kusser on the right.

bass and beats
shameless use of popular drum sample with john gomi providing all horn parts via his turntables. most of this is from a live set from last month. its meant to be simple and for the dance floor. EQ is bass heavy and bright. not much in the middle of the spectrum.
